New white paper – Endocrine Workforce 2026: Recommendations for a Healthier Endocrine Future

Many of you contributed to ESE’s State of Endocrinology surveys (between November 2025 and January 2026), the first comprehensive assessment of Europe’s endocrine workforce. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the challenges facing our profession.
The findings reveal a workforce under growing strain. Without action, it will become harder to recruit and retain specialists, waiting times will increase and there will be less capacity for vital research that could improve patient care.
Among the findings:
- Many endocrine services are struggling to meet demand, with more than a quarter of endocrine professionals saying new patients wait upwards of 90 days for an appointment
- More than a third of early-career endocrine physicians may leave their jobs within five years
- Four in ten respondents do not have enough time for research.
Today, ESE has published the full findings and 29 detailed recommendations in a new white paper, Endocrine Workforce 2026: Recommendations for a Healthier Endocrine Future.
Alongside the white paper, you will also see a shorter, policy-focused call to action, the Prague Declaration, endorsed by 49 national and specialist endocrine societies. Drawing on the white paper’s findings and recommendations, it encourages policymakers and healthcare leaders to take urgent action in five priority areas:
